About the Hyde Park and
District Lions Club
Our
Lions Club meets twice a month at the Riverside United
Church. The second
Monday of each month is our business meeting, beginning
at 7 p.m. Our dinner meeting is held on the fourth
Monday each month, also beginning at 7 p.m.
We raise
funds by selling fireworks for the Victoria Day on the
May 24th weekend and then again for the July 1st
holiday. In the spring we run a yard sale at Van Horik's
Greenhouse and we barbecue a lot throughout the year. We
have our own barbecue on wheels that is pulled behind a
car or truck as well as tents, tables and accessories
that may be needed for an event. We even barbecue at
private functions. We always manage to have a lot of fun
working together.
In the
summers of the past three years, we have hosted a weekly cruse night for
people who collect and/or enjoy classic cars and trucks.
We call our event the "Country Cruizin" and hold it on
Thursday evenings at Steve Plunkett's "Fleetwood
Farm". In 2008, we were proud to be able to donate
$14,000.00 to SARI (Special Abilities Riding Institute).
All of this was thanks to the generous donations and
support of our weekly participants and visitors. In
2009, we supported the Lions Foundation of Canada and
its Dog Guides program. Last year, we donated the funds
raised to the London chapter of Autism Ontario. The
Hyde Park Lions are running this event again next summer
and it would be nice to have you join us some Thursday
evening. You are sure to enjoy yourself and come out
often. You can learn more about this at
www.countrycruizin.com
Our Lions
Club supports many of the Lions Programs involving sight
prevention, Guide Dogs, and Diabetes (the leading cause
of preventable blindness). We also support a number of
local initiatives and enjoy participating in projects
with our friends and neighbours in the Hyde Park
area. We always have fun working the Adopt-A Highway
program where we clean up a section of Highway 22 twice
a year. There are great times to be had with the folks
at Scarecrow Days in Hyde Park. We like to be in the
parade, have people guess the weight of our giant
pumpkin and of course serving more barbecue delights. At
the end of November, we sponsor the Hyde Park Christmas
parade, a community parade with a tremndous
small-town spirit.
There's more
to tell, like manning the Salvation Army Kettles, fund
raising draws, the Boat Show, visitations, the Dog Walk,
and more. If you are interested in being part of this,
you may want to contact our Membership Chair, Lion
John at
john@mclachlin.com. We would
love to meet you.
